About the Farm

Yellow Bluff Farms is located in Southeast Texas, and we raise Brangus steers that can be purchased by individuals. Our steers are raised on a diet of grass and grain. They are growth hormone-free and are never given antibiotics.

We spend 2 years raising our steers from birth until they are “finished” and ready to butcher. Once they get to this point they are generally about 1000+ lbs. We offer free transport to a slaughter house of your choice within 100 miles of our farm.

Pricing

We sell our steers for $5.00/lb (Hanging Weight)

Hanging weight is the weight of the animal after it has been field dressed but before it has been aged, cut, pack aged, and frozen. Hanging weight is typically about 55% of the cow’s total live weight (or 600-700 pounds of our 1000 pound steers).

You will also be responsible for the meat processing fee.

How it Works

At the end of each year our 2-year old grass fed/grain fed Brangus steers are ready to purchase and butcher. We spend the last 3 months feeding them extra grain in order add marbling to the meat. Once you agree to purchase a steer, we will transport it to a slaughter house of your choice within 100 miles of our farm, free of charge. You pay the slaughterhouse processing fee, and once we know the hanging weight, you pay us for the steer.

How much beef does one steer produce?

We get this question a lot, so we thought we’d share this helpful video on calculating how much beef you can expect to take home.

The Waitlist

Yellow Bluff steers are ready to be purchased during the last few months of each year (typically October-December), and since “supplies are limited” so to speak, you will need to get on our waitlist to let us know you’re interested. (Being on this list is not an obligation to purchase.) When our steers are ready we’ll reach out to those on this list to give them first choice. Our process is first come, first serve, and sometimes we have more interested buyers than we have steers, so if we aren’t able to provide you with a steer from our current herd, we will be happy to add you to next year’s waitlist.

Here are some things to keep in mind:
  1. Our steers cost $5/lb of Hanging Weight. And you will also need to pay the slaughterhouse processing fee.
  2. If you do not want to buy a whole steer, we are happy to sell it in half steer portions.
  3. You will need a large freezer space to store your meat in. The top freezer area of a refrigerator will not be enough, even for a half steer.
  4. We will deliver your purchased steer free of charge to the slaughter house of your choice, within 100 miles of our farm in Buna, Texas.
